My role as externals and press director for Sexpression:UK has primarily focused on pushing the visibility of the charity through expanding awareness. The lessons I have learnt within this role are wide-reaching and comprehensive, building my professional experience and knowledge of the charity sector.

As an art student who is, unfortunately and embarrassingly, unaware of media and press, my experience with the frenzy of the press cycle was limited. Through media training and a commitment to learn on the job, I have gained insight incomparable to any other experience. Supported by our competent trustees, I have learnt the importance in taking criticism and advice positively. Alongside personal growth, this has made me a strong team member within all aspects of my life.

Starting out can feel extremely daunting. Decision fatigue is a fitting explanation. There are many avenues which can be explored within the role as externals and press and this can be unbelievably overwhelming. Through this slight wobble, I decided to focus on deepening Sexpression:UK’s pre-existing relationships with external organisations. I have seen the benefit in building and sustaining relationships with our partners. Having candid conversations within these partnerships, has fostered environments of mutual support, collaborative problem-solving and successful engagement.

Across multiple campaigns, projects and events, I have gained a huge amount of professional experience. Setting me apart from other university students, I have experience in working with a range of different organisations and knowledge on how to approach these relationships. From small things like how to write efficient emails to speaking on panels, I have gained confidence in working in a professional environment. This type of experience is extremely difficult to find as a university student and definitely secured me my current job!

Alongside the more serious parts of my role, I learnt the importance of a positive and supportive community. As students, the national committee is always stretched for time. However, we never failed to offer support for each other! From jumping on a call to speak through current stresses to drafting emails for each other, we built a strong team and even stronger friendships.

Reflecting on my role as externals and press director for Sexpression:UK, I can confidently say it has been one of the most fulfilling years of my life. I was able to contribute to a larger conversation about sexual health and education beyond my branch level. There was an immense sense of pride knowing that the work I did helped break down barriers, spread awareness, and normalise important discussions about sex and relationships across the UK.

This experience has been invaluable to my professional and personal development and I would strongly urge you to consider joining next year!
